This episode features a tense campfire gathering where the Scouts (Armin, Mikasa, Jean, Hange) and the Marleyan Warriors (Reiner, Pieck, Annie, Magath) must find common ground to stop Eren.
Yelena methodically exposes the crimes of everyone present, reminding them that they all have blood on their hands. This tension boils over when the truth of Marco’s death is revisited, leading to Jean violently lashing out at Reiner.
Reviewers from Anime News Network and Den of Geek praised the episode for humanizing the conflict and proving that "sitting down and talking" can be as thrilling as a Titan battle.
The group sets aside their mutual hatred to head toward the port, where they hope to secure a "flying boat" (plane) to catch up to Eren's Founding Titan. Critical Analysis
Some fans noted the episode’s distinct visual style, including a "purple tint" to the forest and occasional "slideshow" cuts to tree branches. While polarizing, some viewers felt this enhanced the melancholic and tense atmosphere.
The episode opens with a "what-if" dream sequence of Jean living a peaceful, wealthy life with a wife (implied to be Mikasa) and child. Ultimately, his conscience and the memory of Marco Bodt lead him to reject this "easy life" and join the resistance against Eren.
The episode you are watching, (Season 4, Part 2, Episode 9; overall episode 84), is widely considered one of the series' most critical narrative pivot points. It moves away from the explosive action of the Rumbling to focus on the raw, uncomfortable dialogue between former enemies forced into a desperate alliance. Key Plot Points & Character Shifts
