The central story follows Sharon Goodwin as she reunites with her first love, Reggie Dixon, who arrives at the hospital in critical condition. Sharon allows her emotions to take the lead, interjecting herself into the treatment plan led by Dr. Choi and Dr. Manning. Despite their diagnosis of a long-dormant parasite and their warnings that Reggie will not survive, Sharon pushes for extraordinary measures like ECMO. She eventually has to confront the reality that her judgment was clouded by her personal history.
